Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP)

This document provides a useful template to guide the delivery of care for the dying to complement the skill and expertise of the practitioner using it. Using the LCP in any environment requires regular assessment and involves continuous reflection, challenge, critical decision making and clinical skill underpinned by a learning and teaching programme.

In March 2008, following recommendation from NHS North West and agreement through the PCT CEO Alliance, the management of the EoLC programme was devolved to Cancer Networks. Cancer Networks, and their respective Boards, have extended their remit to include end of life for all conditions, not just cancer.

The local programme is managed through the Cheshire and Merseyside Palliative and EoLC Network. The Strategic Lead is Kathy Collins Associate Director, and the Clinical Lead is Professor John Ellershaw who is the chair of the Cheshire and Merseyside Palliative and End of Life Care Clinical Network Group.

The programme is supported by two programme leads:

Caroline Flynn End of Life Care Lead for Community and Social Care Services

Elaine Owen End of Life Care Lead for Acute and Specialist Services

Business Support is provided by Jackie Sanders

The aim of the CMCN programme locally is to promote equity and consistency across the cancer network in the delivery of end of life care services across all sectors and disease groups; this includes consistency around data collection in relation to EOLC tools and sharing examples of good practice.
