The Advanced Communication Skills Training (ACST) Programme offers training in advanced communication skills for senior healthcare professionals (SHCPs) working in cancer care, in line with the NICE Supportive and Palliative Care Guidance. Certification provides evidence of compliance with the Cancer Peer Review measure which states that ‘at least those core members of the team who have direct clinical contact with patients should have attended the national advanced communications skills training’.
The National Cancer Action Team has charged Cancer Networks with the responsibility of implementing this programme of training and has made a limited source of funding available in order to do this.
The new website for ACST - www.connected.nhs.uk - has now been launched and provides a useful resource for the public and registered users. This will provide a useful way of keeping in touch with events and current issues; dialogue will be possible via various forums.
Compliance with Peer Review: Given the limited funds available and the overall challenge of ensuring compliance with the measure, Connected have taken the decision that attendance at previous Maguire, Wilkinson or Fallowfield courses at any time will be recognised as compliance with the peer review measure for the current time.
Health Care Professionals will be required to provide evidence of attendance in order to demonstrate compliance.
